Saloum Islands
The Saloum is a river of Senegal 250 km long in the natural region of Sine-Saloum.
It flows into the Atlantic Ocean after forming a delta with Sine. It flows also partially in Kaolack city.
North of the Saloum Delta, the arms of the river meet the sea by penetrating the mangrove.
It is there, sheltered in the roots of the mangroves, that the fish come to spawn.
The Saloum River allowed the construction of an important Port during the colonial period in the 19th century.
We can also note the construction of the Noirot Bridge in the early twentieth century to connect the two banks of the river to the city of Kaolack.
