SALOUM ISLANDS

The Saloum is a river of Senegal 250 km long in the natural region of Sine-Saloum.

It flows into the Atlantic Ocean after forming a delta with Sine. He waters the city of Kaolack.

North of the Saloum Delta, the arms of the river meet the sea by penetrating the mangrove.

It is there, sheltered in the roots of the mangroves, that the fish come to spawn

The Saloum was quickly coveted by the construction of Fort Kaolack in the nineteenth century during the colonial period and the last port.

We can also note the construction of the Noirot Bridge in the early twentieth century to connect the two banks of the river to the city of Kaolack. It is the region of origin of Léopold Sédar Senghor.
